A panel of individuals who work for the FDA voted against the use of a new type of Viagra for women. This is a pill that has been researched and tested for use as an aid for women who need to boost their sex drive.
Reasons for Disapproval
The main reason that female Viagra was rejected as reported on June 19, 2010 is because the risks of using it seem to vastly outweigh the effectiveness of it. This determination was outspoken by panel chair Julia Johnson who is the chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
About the Effort
The reason efforts are being made to create a female Viagra is to help treat women who are pre-menopausal. Often right before a woman hits menopause she starts to notice a significant decline in desire for sex.
The commercial name of this new female Viagra Girosia has not yet been approved for sale in any country. However, that does not mean the market potential is not there. It is just that further work needs to be done on it to make it comparable to medications such as Viagra or other ED drug.
Medical Trial Info
According to a study printed in the New England Journal of Medicine, about 40 % of women who took the female Viagra suffer from varying degrees of hypo-activity (inability to perform sexually).
However, the worry is that these studies are funded by huge pharmaceutical corporations. An analysis of two FDA clinical trials suggests that there was not a “statistically significant improvement” in sexual desire.
However, it was noted the trial patients who took the flibanserin (Girosa) were able to enjoy sex more (have a more satisfying experience) with their partners than those who took a placebo (fake medicine used in experimental trials).
However, overall the studies completed on this new form of Viagra for women did not satisfy efficacy requirements at all. The test was done on women who suffer from Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD).
One of the hugest problems with using flibanserin is that it causes depression. This is due to the way it reduces serotonin in women who use it.
The other problem is that Girosia has an effect on dopamine and norepinephrine levels and thus sexual desire is interrupted. This is one main reason why this Viagra-like drug is not yet approved for women. Maybe it will be in the future but not right now.
